Good thing the scarf of monotony is finished...school started this week. Back to school means back to socks. The scarf wasn't even off the needles and I was already yearning to start socks. Yummy Socks that Rock Scottish Highlands socks. I couldn't stand it any longer and needed to wind it up so that I could get a feel for the color combination in order to decide on a pattern. Isn't it gorgeous!?!
I know, I know. Awhile ago I said that Scottish Highlands should become "Here there be Dragons". But once I downloaded the 11-PAGE pattern, I discovered that I needed TWO skeins of STR. The hunt for a new pattern began. Do you know HOW many sock patterns are in my house? I won't count them (because I really don't want to know).
Lately, I've been listening to Brenda and others sing the praises of the "toe-up" sock. In honor of "back to school" and educational endeavors, I decided to see what there was about this technique that appeals to so many.
I present to you the start of Falling Leaves from Knitty with a modification or two. First, Brenda was right, the Magic Cast-on is a breeze. Next, for the heel, I plan to use the Widdershins heel-flap instructions. Heel flaps make me happy.
72 stitches is working out perfect to avoid pooling with this medium weight STR yarn. Thanks again to India (my SP8 pal) for this wonderful yarn. It's a treat that I'll always have to remind me of her and Scotland.
(What you see here is the result of this week's "wait-time" for the 4th grader's afterschool pick-up. Socks are great "Mom's taxi service" projects! I would have shared it with you sooner, but a nasty cold has made its way into this Mom's respiratory system.)

I too had (have) the cold (plus fever). It does not rock. The Third Daughter rescued me last night with medicine, dinner, sprite, oj, and ice cream. Feel Better!
